What is the Best Country on the Planet to Live and Work?

In January 2016, U.S. News & World Report, in collaboration with BAV Consulting and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, reported results of their recent survey that sampled the perceptions of more than 16,000 people in four global regions regarding what is the best country on the planet to live and work. The researchers assessed numerous measures for each country, including the United Nations’ Human Development Index, gross domestic product, tourism and total exports, what is the most forward-looking country, what is the best country to be a woman, to start a career, to raise children, and many other topics. The best country, according to this research, is Germany, home to Europe’s largest economy and the top country for encouraging entrepreneurship. Germany is highly regarded for providing global leadership and caring for its citizens. Its leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, was named Person of the Year for 2015 by both the Financial Times and Time magazine. The number 2, 3, and 4 best countries on the planet to live and work are Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Rounding out the top 10 best countries are Sweden, Australia, Japan, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Finishing last among the 60 countries considered was Algeria, a North African country facing multiple challenges ranging from international criticism of its record on civil liberties to tackling terrorism and high unemployment. Other countries that finishing near the bottom were Ukraine, Iran, Nigeria and Pakistan.
